Hawke’s Bay Head Coach Craig Philpott is the new Assistant Coach of NZ U20.

Hawke’s Bay Head Coach Craig Philpott is the new Assistant Coach of New Zealand Under 20.

He replaces Counties Manukau Coach Tana Umaga, following his appointment as the Blues Head Coach.

The former Canterbury lock joins the coaching team headed by Canterbury Head Coach Scott Robertson who took New Zealand to the Under 20 Championship title in Italy in June.

"Craig will bring a massive amount of expertise with him to the coaching group," said Robertson. "With his leadership and teaching skills and his ability to get the best out of young players, he will be a huge asset to our programme."

Philpott will take up his role later this year to help prepare New Zealand Under 20 for the 2016 championship to be held in Manchester, England. The first camp of the 2016 campaign will be held in late November in Palmerston North.

Philpott said he was looking forward to the challenge of working with an important high performance team that plays a key role in building depth in the game in New Zealand.

"I have a passion for learning. In working with the coaching and management staff, we will constantly be challenging ourselves and the players to be 'better than before’.

"As current world champions, it’s essential that we continue to raise the performance bar as other sides will certainly be doing so. I’m really looking forward to playing my part in helping New Zealand Under 20 keep evolving its approach so we can stay ahead of the competition."

Hawkes Bay Tuis Women's Rugby Looking for First Win

The Hawkes Bay Tuis Women’s Rugby team is looking for their first win against Canterbury this Saturday at Tremain Field at Park Island.

Tuis manager Blair Heasley has been coaching the players and he is expecting a winning game from them.

This game against Canterbury has been a target game for the Tuis since the beginning of the season because of the similarities of the two teams and Heasley is looking forward to what will hopefully the first win of the season. Canterbury is coming from a recent win against Otago last weekend.

A senior player said the toughest challenge on Saturday will be the fact that some of the women on the Canterbury side do have more experience on the field playing for the Black Ferns, but is confident that their training regime has prepared the women well to counter that experience. The Tuis are a young and developing team with the average player’s age being 19-20 years old including some school age players.

Kick-off is at 11:00 pm on Saturday with free entry at Tremain Field at Park Island.

New Hawke's Bay website shows shared services.

Hawke’s Bay people can now see the growing range of services where all five councils are working together to drive operational efficiencies and reduce costs.

Hawke’s Bay Local Authority Shared Services (HB LASS) Ltd has launched their website showing the internal services, processes and shared purchasing power where councils aim to collectively achieve the greatest time and cost efficiencies.

The driver behind HB LASS has so far been to improve service levels, lower costs, improve efficiency and increase value through innovation for Hawke’s Bay ratepayers. The current services and cost-sharing projects include insurance, information services, Geographic Information Services (GIS, also known as mapping) and fuel.

“This new website will give Hawke’s Bay people more information about what their councils are doing to share services and save on costs,” says HB LASS Chairman Craig Waterhouse.

“For insurance, we partnered with Manawatu, Whanganui, Bay of Plenty and some South Island councils to achieve more than $3 million worth of savings for the 25 councils involved,” adds Mr Waterhouse.

CEO of Wairoa District Council, Fergus Power supports the economy of scale achieved by HB LASS saying, “Through our efforts, Hawke’s Bay saved $930,000 for the 15/16 year insurance programme, while the GIS shared service also saved $170,000 in joint software purchasing.”

Liz Lambert, Interim Chief Executive of Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is also a project advocate.

“We’re confident we can deliver more savings through joint procurement and by aligning contracting programmes for shared services across the region. This is good for our region and our ratepayers,” says Liz Lambert.

“HB LASS has been quietly working away, focussed on delivery. Our new website shares these successes and will continue to inform on the work of HB LASS,” adds Mrs Lambert.

HB LASS Ltd was established in December 2012. Its core function is to investigate, develop and deliver shared services, where and when that can be done more effectively for any combination of some or all of the shareholding councils.  Insurance, information services, GIS and fuel are currently shared services. The company is owned by Central Hawke's Bay District, Hastings District, Napier City, Wairoa District and Hawke's Bay Regional Councils. Each Council CEO is a director of the company.
