Hastings toddler dies in hospital after alleged assault

The 2½-year-old boy who was assaulted in his Hastings home earlier this week has died last night in hospital.

Police were called to the home in Hastings around midday on Monday.

The boy died last evening in the intensive care unit at Hawke’s Bay Hospital.

A 17-year-old Rotorua youth has been charged with assaulting a child.  He appeared in the Hastings District Court on Tuesday.  He was remanded on bail to reappear in court on November 3 and was granted interim name suppression.

At about 3:30pm this afternoon Hawkes Bay Police arrested a 51 year old man who was the subject of a prolonged fleeing driver incident through Hastings.

“This individual put the lives of the community at extreme risk through his actions, firstly by not stopping for Police and then driving at extreme speeds and recklessly overtaking multiple cars. The incident was resolved through successfully deploying road spikes on Evenden Road, just off the Napier-Hastings expressway”.

The male, who was wanted on warrant, will appear in the Hastings District Court on Saturday morning facing a number of driving and dishonesty charges.

A Waipukurau drunk driver causes extensive damage, ends up in police custody

A Waipukurau drunk driver is facing numerous charges after he went on a wilful damage spree that ended at the local police station.

Police were called yesterday morning at 2.20am after reports of a drunk driver racing around Waipukurau.  When police arrived at the station they found the 27-year-old man in the police rear yard with his car.

Sergeant Neil Baker said while the man waited for police to arrive, he threw his car keys through a station window, causing it to break.  He also tipped over a rubbish bin and ripped plants out of the station garden.

The man is also reported to have driven onto the grounds of Russell Park during the day, causing extensive damage to the sports ground.

The male is due to appear in the Waipukurau District Court on October 19 to face charges of driving with excess breath alcohol, careless driving, driving with sustained loss of traction and wilful damage to the police station.
