A new unit is being officially opened at the Hawke's Bay Regional Prison this week to help prisoners reintegrate themselves into society.

The Whare Oranga Ake unit will be used for selected prisoners nearing the end of their sentence.

They'll receive help with employment, rehabilitation, accommodation and improving family relationships.

The Associate Minister of Corrections Pita Sharples and Corrections Chief Executive Ray Smith will be speaking at the official opening ceremony on Thursday morning.
