Lotto Powerball has jackpotted to an epic $23 million this weekend, giving players the chance to win enough money to make every day Valentine’s Day.
Valentine’s Day is the one day each year traditionally dedicated to celebrating love and encouraging romance. And while winning Lotto is not always synonymous with romance, it’s not surprising that winning big inspires some grand gestures.
Last year, a woman from Hastings won $40,000 on an Instant Kiwi and used her winnings to treat her fiancé to a special engagement ring to match her own.
"I have my ring and I wanted him to have a special one as well. It also shows people that he’s taken!" she said.
In a similar vein, the winner of last year’s $33 million ‘must be won’ Powerball jackpot straight away started thinking about what he would buy his wife.
"Maybe my wife would like a new car? We’ve only ever bought second hand cars before," he said.
As a self-proclaimed "Westie" from West Auckland, that is a declaration of true love.
With $23 million up for grabs with Powerball this weekend, the winner has the potential to rival some of the grandest romantic gestures of all time, such as the $15 million diamond necklace Richard Burton bought for Elizabeth Taylor, or the island that Jay-Z bought for Beyoncé for a cool $20 million.
But what’s more romantic than a wedding? Weddings are notoriously expensive and the most expensive New Zealand wedding reportedly cost $10 million. However, that would still leave the winner with more than enough change for a spectacular honeymoon.
