A group of Napier high school students with a social conscience have organised a garage sale this Saturday to raise money for food parcels for families in need, as part of a school assignment.
Taradale High School Year 10 classmates Danielle Stephenson, Toni Le Lievre, Sophie Hogan, and Alexis Overend are the organisers of this Saturday’s garage sale, which will run from 9am to 11am on the field at Taradale Primary School, with entry via Ngarimu Crescent.
Spokesperson Danielle Stephenson, 14, said she and her schoolmates hoped to raise up to $300 at the sale, with all funds to go to the Napier Family Centre to be used for food parcels for families in need.
The girls had collected all the items for the garage sale, which Stephenson said was part of a social sciences project they were currently undertaking at school.
“We had to choose an action that would help the people in Hawke’s Bay that are in poverty. We chose the Napier Family Centre because one of the girl’s mum’s works for them, and a couple of us have helped them as volunteers before, so we knew they would use the money for a good cause,” Stephenson said.
She added there would be about 200 items for sale on Saturday, from children's toys to clothing to jewellery, with prices ranging from just 20 cents to $30.
“People will be able to pick up a bargain and help out some families in need at the same time,” said Stephenson.
The August 13 sale is cash only, no eftpos.
